This is our last regular website update of the year and once again, it includes a wealth of new information. We start with the announcement of STERA, Inc.'s once- a- year fundraising campaign with many new ways to support this website and keep it permanently free of any advertising. Sadly, we also mark the passing of two legendary Shroud scholars, Dame Isabel Piczek and Professor Gino Zaninotto. This update also brings us news of (and a closer look at) the first ever Shroud exhibition in Seoul, South Korea. It also brings you four more issues of Rex Morgan's Shroud News, along with many new books, articles and papers, links to new videos and much more. Enjoy! Here is the Update Table of Contents: STERA, Inc. Launches 2. 01. 6 Fundraising Campaign. As much as I love the work I do as editor of this website and as President of STERA, Inc., one of the most difficult (and uncomfortable) responsibilities I have is raising funds each year in the form of contributions to support the website and our other long term projects. Frankly, with the large number of visitors we have each year, we could generate substantial revenue by allowing advertising on the site, but we have never allowed ads in our 2. I am here! Fundraising is my least favorite part of this job and is very difficult for me, since I was self- employed for more than forty years and always earned what I needed. In fact, I supported the website for its first fourteen years at my own personal expense. Since the founding of STERA, Inc., I have dedicated myself full time to this work, and trust me, producing Shroud. Of course, unlike most other non- profits, we only have one fundraising effort each year and prefer not to bombard you with continuous requests for contributions (which I am sure you appreciate). But now, that time has come again and this year we offer several new ways to support STERA, Inc. In September we announced our participation in a new non- profit program from Amazon called . Amazon charges no fees for this service. You can even adjust your settings to automatically enter Amazon Smile every time you log on to the Amazon website. It's an easy way to support our work and this website without spending anything extra. We want to thank those of you who have already logged in and started supporting us this way. It is truly appreciated! You can also support STERA, Inc. With the holidays fast approaching, you might want to look at some of the items we make available, including a miniature Shroud replica on cotton canvas, a set of high quality lithographic prints, several different Shroud transparencies in backlit Photo. In 1928, the top 1% of families received 23.9% of all pretax income, while the bottom 90% received 50.7%. We thank you in advance for your consideration and generosity. Barrie Schwortz. President, STERA, Inc. Posted November 2. In Memoriam. It is with deep sadness that I must report the death of our dear friend Dame Isabel Piczek, in Los Angeles on September 2. By profession, Isabel was a world renowned monumental sacred artist whose stained glass windows, huge murals and mosaics grace countless monasteries, churches, convents and schools. Probably her most significant contribution to the Shroud were her articles that showed from a professional artist's point of view why the Shroud is not a painting. In fact, her article titled, Is the Shroud of Turin a Painting? A memorial service was held for Isabel on Thursday, October 1. AM at the San Fernando Mission Church in Mission Hills, CA. She was laid to rest in San Fernando Mission Mausoleum section at San Fernando Mission Cemetery. Isabel's mother and sister are also resting in this same cemetery. Here is an excerpt from her official Obituary, which tells the amazing story of her life in great detail. She was born in Hatvan, Hungary to Zoltan and Elona Piczek. Her father Zoltan was a noted artist and art professor. Isabel graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest and in addition to being a world class artist also became an internationally known Physicist, recognized for her study of the Shroud of Turin. Isabel shared her formative years as an artist with her sister Edith who also nurtured and developed her own artistic style. Their partnership blossomed and matured through the years. Edith was a frequent collaborator and Isabel's lifetime companion until her death in 2. She was an exceptional person, both Scientist and Artist .. Each year, to celebrate Christmas, she used to send reproductions of these numerous vitraux. Most being slender pictures of the Risen Christ! May God receive among His Chosen Dame Isabel, marvelous witness to the glory of Christ, All of Sindonology is mourning for her, particularly CIELT's members, who she visited many times,Marcel Alonso*************** Isabel was a wonderful friend. We were fellow researchers on the Shroud of Turin and metin 1. Paris, France at an international conference on the Shroud. We have been friends ever since. She was a remarkable person and a true prodigy. She was reading at age two! She and her sister Edith painted a 4. Vatican library at age 1. She told her beloved father at age two that she would be the . I love you Isabel, rest in peace, may you be face to face with our savior who was the subject of your life. She did not use the internet but she would write me long letters. I enjoyed her Christmas cards which were her latest designs that she was doing. She was a great artist and I found her great love for the Lord was what enkindled her spirit and inspired her art and research. A Shroud friend of mine, Dan, who also lived in San Diego and I would often drive to LA to visit and have dinner with Isabel. Isabel, now you really know all about the mystery of the Image on the cloth. The Shroud would be a mural if it were a painting; she strongly disagreed with those, such as the late Walter C. Mc. Crone, that the Shroud was a painting! Also included are many photographs that Paul made when he visited Isabel and some of her many artwork installations in California. Creator of great wall frescoes and of magnificent stained glass windows, she has received many awards for her masterpieces. In the field of Sindonology, she has proved how a medieval artist could not absolutely be able to realize the image present on the Shroud for various reasons, among which also the problems related to perspective. Together with other scholars, she had founded the AMSTAR (American Shroud of Turin Association for Research) and she had collaborated to the organization of two international congresses on the Shroud in Dallas, in 2. Refined and sensitive woman, she leaves an indelible memory and a huge void. Her unique combination of nuclear physicist and world renowned artist led her to publish many remarkable theories about the Turin Shroud and to present learned papers at international conferences over a period of many years discussing her various proofs of the age and probable authenticity of the Shroud. I had the privilege of knowing Isabel for nearly forty years. She was forthright in discussion, meticulous in research, eloquent in reporting, and a charming companion with supreme qualities of gentility, compassion and courtesy. We met frequently at almost every conference in the latter part of the last century at which we both often presented papers. That she may rest in peace. Petrus Soons***************We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to everyone who knew and loved her. Rest in peace dear Isabel. Barrie Schwortz***************In Memoriam. Once again, it is my sad duty to report the passing of another important Shroud scholar, Prof. Gino Zaninotto, in Italy on September 1. That same day Joe Marino notified us in a brief e- mail of Prof. Zaninotto's passing and the next day Emanuela Marinelli sent us the message she posted on the News page of her Collegamento pro Sindone website, which we are reprinting here with her permission. Gino Zaninotto, historian and Latin and Greek scholar, died yesterday at 8. In his extensive research on the Shroud, he had carried out in- depth studies on the Roman scourging and crucifixion. He has translated and commented on the De cruce by Justus Lipsius (1. He is also remembered for having discovered and translated important manuscripts, such as the codex Vat. Gr. 5. 11 sheets 1. Gregory, archdeacon and Legal Secretary of the great Church of Constantinople (St. Sophia), a decisive acquisition in favor of the identification of the Edessa Image with the Shroud. We also thank him for the reporting of an interesting document: the Codex Vossianus Latinus Q 6. Rijksuniversiteit of Leyden (Netherlands). It is a tenth- century manuscript that reports an eighth- century story coming from the Syriac area, translated by the archiater Smera of Constantinople. It says that Jesus left the imprint of his entire body on a cloth kept in the Great Church of Edessa and those who contemplated it, could see the Lord like those who had met him on earth. Such an interpretation often works hand- in- glove with the common idea that Jesus “intensified” the Law in the Sermon on the Mount, setting a higher standard in order to show that no person could actually live up to God’s standards, showing that a person could only be saved by recognizing the impossibility of righteousness and then receiving forgiveness (a subject that will soon be addressed on this blog). So the common teaching is that sexual lust is absolutely evil. The ordinary interpretation of this passage is that lust is equivalent to adultery; that is, if a man sexually desires a woman, he has already committed adultery with. For example, here’s a recent (and quite common) response to the question of what lust is from a message board conversation I had some time ago: “I take lust to mean wanting something more than you should in an unhealthy way.”This conception of “lust” often overlaps with the prior interpretation, to the effect that the young man is told, “Of course you will recognize that a woman is beautiful. The Law doesn’t forbid lusting after a woman? Well, as it turns out, the Greek word usually translated “lust” in this passage (. You will not covet your neighbors house or his field or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or any animal which is your neighbor’s.”Sounds an awful lot like what Jesus says in this passage, doesn’t it? They’re even more alike once one realizes that the Greek word for “woman” and “wife” happens to be the same. In this passage, Jesus reminds his audience that the Law not only prohibits adultery, it prohibits coveting. This is not so much an intensification of the Law as it is a reminder of what the Law already says. And just as the Law itself was intended to be fulfilled, Jesus intends his words here to be followed (and that following them is entirely possible). Another important point is that the command does not forbid recognition of quality or even desire itself (such would be nonsense) but something else: it forbids the action of coveting (hence the verbal form). James 1, where lust leads to sin but is not itself sinful). It is also important to note the distinction between the verbal form and the nominal form: when the Hebrew . This fits well with the Tenth Command, which is perhaps best understood as forbidding fixing one’s desire upon obtaining something that is not rightfully one’s own. In fact, the word simply refers to a strong, passionate desire, used either of sexual desire or of a strong desire for something non- sexual. Platonism explains human thought and action by dividing the “soul” (or life- force) into three parts, each of which is personified as a separate agent in itself. The highest part is the “mind,” “intellect,” or “reason” (. This part is concerned with things like truth and knowledge and the highest aspects of human life. This part is represented in the human body by the head, which is the highest part of the body, stretching towards the heavens. In the Republic, this part is identified with the philosopher/rulers who are the natural and proper leaders of the ideal city- state, while it is identified with the world creator “demiurge” in the Timaeus. As mentioned above, the lowest part (. This seat of the appetites was. Take food, for example. The Quiet German The astonishing rise of Angela Merkel, the most powerful woman in the world. When a person is hungry, it makes no difference if the barbecue smell is coming from the neighbor’s house. Since it is prone to run amok, the appetite part of the soul must be governed by the higher parts of the soul to keep it in check. In Parmenides’ charioteer analogy, this part is likened to a wild stallion, powerful but undisciplined. The middle part of the soul is the “spirited” or “emotional” part of the soul (. This part is the seat of the will and courage and can be shaped through education and training. It is represented by the chest/heart area on the body and the warrior/soldier class in the Republic. These three parts operate in harmony (likened to a harmony of three musical notes, each necessary to the song),with the ideal scenario (following Parmenides’ analogy of the charioteer) being that the mind govern the other two as a charioteer, with the “spirited” will as the lead horse and the appetite as the second horse, being governed by the union of the higher two natures. On the other hand, the danger is always that the appetites will gain the “spirited” part as an accomplice and overpower the will, leading to reckless action. Plato thus sees it as critical that the mind retains the allegiance of the will, giving it direction and controlling the appetites. So to summarize: the presence of “lust” or “desire” is an assumed part of each human person. As such the presence of such “lusts” is in no way sinful; it is simply a part of being an embodied person. But directing these desires towards taking, obtaining, or enjoying what is not lawful is forbidden. By now we should understand that, in contrast to the English term “lust,” which has come to be a pretty much entirely negative term. But it is critical that we make the distinction between a condemnation of desire and a prohibition against coveting forbidden things, including one’s neighbor’s wife. Now we’re finally ready to look at the verse itself. The Grammar of Matthew 5: 2. The Greek does not say, “look at a woman with lust” or “look at a woman lustfully,” as though it were describing the manner of looking. Matthew uses this construction four other times, and each time it denotes the purpose of the action: “Beware of practicing your righteousness before men in order to be noticed by them.” (Matt 6: 1)“. Nor is he suggesting that such thoughts or attractions being triggered by a look are sinful. The look is not the problem (nor is the presence of a beautiful woman, which some of that day tended to blame as the real problem); no, these are assumed. What is remarkable (given the popular misinterpretation) is that Jesus likewise assumes the presence of sexual desire in the man as a given, and that sexual desire isn’t seen as the problem. Instead, Jesus addresses the matter of intent, of volition, the purpose of the look. The issue is not the appetite itself but how a man directs this natural appetite and inclination. Yes, adultery is a sin, but the sin has entered the heart the moment one determines to seek it out. The moment a man even looks at a woman for that purpose, adultery has already polluted the heart. This is the line between natural sexual attraction and the “coveting” prohibited by the Law: the Law forbids directing one’s desire towards that which is not lawful. Jesus does not condemn the desire but the action taken on the desire. In modern terms, it’s the difference between seeing a woman and being attracted to her. In fact, in modern terms, the saying could be taken like this: “Obviously, having extramarital sex is wrong, but the moment you decide to start down that path, adultery is already in your heart.”Finally, Jesus does not say that the thought and the action are equivalent, as is often taught. The passage does not say, “Once you’ve thought it, it’s the same as actually having done it.” That very notion is absurd! Rather, Jesus says that adultery has been committed in the heart, that the will has already bent itself towards adultery. Again, the emphasis is on intent. Therefore, Jesus says, deal with the primary problem of intention and adultery becomes a non- issue. As will be shown below, the suggestion that the thought and action are equivalent can cause much harm. Why It Matters. The biggest problem with the way these verses are usually explained is that it misplaces the focus away from the will, from the commitment of the heart, towards a condemnation of the natural desires human beings are created having. Young men in many churches are effectively told that there is something inherently sinful in their sexual impulses. There are several results that typically follow from this: A great deal of self- defeat and guilt about sexual desire is a problem in much of the church. Young men are often entirely consumed with their efforts “not to lust,” as though focusing even more attention on the matter of sexual desire would actually help things! In the same vein, I have even had married men talk to me about how they try not to “lust” for their wives! This stems from the misguided idea that if their desire for sex is simply because they’re “horny,” there’s something inherently wrong with that, something to feel guilty about. You’d probably be surprised how often this is the case. The obvious conclusion is to ask why anyone should try to live up to it, since one’s salvation isn’t determined by doing this stuff anyway, only how one believes.)Some who understand this passage to be a condemnation of lust actually reason that they can have extramarital (or at least premarital) sex as long as they “don’t lust.” Following is an actual quote from a message board discussion on this subject: “The only reason to wait . Adultery is having sex with someone elses . I don’t know anywhere in the bible . On the contrary, “lust” itself is not a sin but can lead to sin if it is not properly governed and put under the authority of the Spirit (cf. Instead of focusing on “lust,” if this passage is to be correctly taught, the emphasis should be placed squarely on the will: that is, “What is the proper response to sexual desire?” There are proper outlets for sexual desire, but it is the exercise of the sexual appetite outside these confines is the problem. Even prior to actually committing the act, once the will has turned towards illicit behavior, sin has already entered the heart and, once fully conceived, will bring forth death. Part of the payoff for properly understanding these two verses is the understanding that the requirement they set forth is neither impossible nor unreasonable. There is no requirement to somehow lose the drives that we were born with, nor should there be any guilt for having them. On the contrary, it is a matter of the commitment of the will, the orientation of the heart, that Jesus is discussing. Serbia, un estado muy reciente, o la destrucci? Theory of justification is a part of epistemology that attempts to understand the justification of propositions and beliefs. Epistemologists are concerned with various epistemic features of belief, which include the ideas of justification, warrant, rationality, and probability. Of these four terms, the term that has been most widely used and discussed by the early 2. Loosely speaking, justification is the reason that someone (properly) holds a belief. When a claim is in doubt, justification can be used to support the claim and reduce or remove the doubt. Justification can use empiricism (the evidence of the senses), authoritative testimony (the appeal to criteria and authority), or logicaldeduction. Subjects of justification. This is in part because of the influence of the definition of knowledge as . More generally, theories of justification focus on the justification of statements or propositions. The subject of justification has played a major role in the value of knowledge as . Kvanvig attempts to show that knowledge is no more valuable than true belief, and in the process dismissed the necessity of justification due to justification not being connected to the truth. Justifications and explanations. In much the same way arguments and explanations may be confused with each other, as may explanations and justifications. An uncritical listener may believe the speaker is trying to gain sympathy for the person and his or her actions, but it does not follow that a person proposing an explanation has any sympathy for the views or actions being explained. This is an important distinction because we need to be able to understand and explain terrible events and behavior in attempting to discourage it. The rights in question are neither political nor moral, however, but intellectual. Beliefs are not typically formed completely at random, and thus we have an intellectual responsibility, or obligation, to try to believe what is true and to avoid believing what is false. The standard definition is that a concept is normative if it is a concept regarding or depending on the norms, or obligations and permissions (very broadly construed), involved in human conduct. It is generally accepted that the concept of justification is normative, because it is defined as a concept regarding the norms of belief. Interestingly, theories of justification generally include other aspects of epistemology, such as knowledge. Popular theories of justification include: Coherentism . Oceny, recenzje, obsada, dyskusje wiadomo Justified (1909) on IMDb: The awakening to a broader understanding of one's life partner in marriage, after the primrose path of the honeymoon is left behind, and the. If a belief is justified, then it has at least one justifier. An example of a justifier would be an item of evidence. For example, if a woman is aware that her husband returned from a business trip smelling like perfume, and that his shirt has smudged lipstick on its collar, the perfume and the lipstick can be evidence for her belief that her husband is having an affair. In that case, the justifiers are the woman's awareness of the perfume and the lipstick, and the belief that is justified is her belief that her husband is having an affair. Not all justifiers have to be what can properly be called . Regardless, to be justified, a belief has to have a justifier. Three things that have been suggested as justifiers are: Beliefs only. Beliefs together with other conscious mental states. Beliefs, conscious mental states, and other facts about us and our environment (which one may or may not have access to). At least sometimes, the justifier of a belief is another belief. When, to return to the earlier example, the woman believes that her husband is having an affair, she bases that belief on other beliefs. Strictly speaking, her belief isn't based on the evidence itself? What if she thought that all of that evidence were just a hoax? What if her husband commonly wears perfume and lipstick on business trips? For that matter, what if the evidence existed, but she did not know about it? Then, of course, her belief that her husband is having an affair wouldn't be based on that evidence, because she did not know it was there at all; or, if she thought that the evidence were a hoax, then surely her belief couldn't be based on that evidence. Consider a belief P. Either P is justified or P is not justified. If P is justified, then another belief Q may be justified by P. If P is not justified, then P cannot be a justifier for any other belief: neither for Q, nor for Q's negation. For example, suppose someone might believe that there is intelligent life on Mars, and base this belief on a further belief, that there is a feature on the surface of Mars that looks like a face, and that this face could only have been made by intelligent life. So the justifying belief is: that face- like feature on Mars could only have been made by intelligent life. And the justified belief is: there is intelligent life on Mars. But suppose further that the justifying belief is itself unjustified. It would in no way be one's intellectual right to suppose that this face- like feature on Mars could have only been made by intelligent life; that view would be irresponsible, intellectually speaking. Thus, such a belief is unjustified because the justifier on which it depends is itself not justified. Commonly used justifiers. Bartley, David Miller and Karl Popper. Watkins.)In justificationism, criticism consists of trying to show that a claim cannot be reduced to the authority or criteria that it appeals to. That is, it regards the justification of a claim as primary, while the claim itself is secondary. By contrast, nonjustificational criticism works towards attacking claims themselves. Bartley also refers to a third position, which he calls critical rationalism in a more specific sense, claimed to have been Popper's view in his Open Society. It has given up justification, but not yet adopted nonjustificational criticism. Instead of appealing to criteria and authorities, it attempts to describe and explicate them. Fogelin claims to detect a suspicious resemblance between the Theories of Justification and Agrippa's five modes leading to the suspension of belief. He concludes that the modern proponents have made no significant progress in responding to the ancient modes of pyrrhonic skepticism. Fogelin, Pyrrhonian Reflections on Knowledge and Justification, Oxford University Press, 1. ISBN 9. 78- 0- 1. But when he leaves the room, she makes no secret of her distaste for the man.
